That’s what researchers are finding out about how exercise influences the immune system. It turns out that you can get too much of a good thing.
In a blog last month I wrote about whether it was a good idea to try to exercise when you’re already sick with the flu (no, it’s not!). This article from the NY Times discusses how exercise affects the immune system, and how the amount of exercise you do can either bolster or suppress your body’s natural defenses.
The article cites a number of very revealing experiments. It seems clear that moderate exercise can help keep you from getting sick. It’s equally evident that pushing yourself to the point of exhaustion can be detrimental to your health.
