If you’ve taken their classes, you know what great instructors Hollie Schmidt and Mary Anne Schaffer are. Many of you are also aware of the fantastic job they do with the Napa High School dance program (Hollie is the head coach, Mary Anne is her assistant). Here’s the Napa Valley Register article outlining their latest triumph, leading the NHS spiritleaders to victory at the National Dance Alliance National Championships.
The finals took place at the Hard Rock Live Theater in Orlando, Fla. The girls from Napa claimed the highest award of the competition, the Grand Championship, for their combined score in the Pom and Jazz categories. This is the second time they claimed the top overall prize, which they also won back in 2004.
The team put on dominating performance, capturing both the Best in Pom and Best in Jazz awards. Their routines were very intricate and highly technical, and they received perfect scores from several of the judges. The squad was also given awards for Most Innovative Choreography and for Best Showmanship.
You can see video of their winning performances at the Varsity.com website. Type “Napa” into the search bar, and you can watch them all. Don’t miss the winning Jazz performance, it’s a real show-stopper!
Once you see the routines it will be apparent that Hollie and Mary Anne spend a tremendous amount of time getting their team ready to compete. Despite the pressure in performing for judges, their routines are nearly flawless. Make sure you congratulate them the next time you see them. They deserve it!
